If the engine is being repaired then the engine get taken out. Then the cylinder head is removed and it get pressure tested, skimmed, cleaned and has the valves cleaned and re-seated with new valve seals and springs if needed. After which the engine pistons and crankshaft are taken out so that they can be looked at and see if they are damaged or bent in anyway, if the piston con rods are bent then they are replaced if not the crankshaft is re skimmed to factory specifications because over time it may have warped in the slightest but its enough to notice a difference in power. Once the crankshaft has been skimmed the pistons get new rings to separate the water and oil so hat they do not mix, then the pistons are but back in the engine block with new bearings and the crack shaft gets new front and rear main oil seals to make sure that they do not leak any oil. Once the crankshaft and pistons are back in they are torqued to a manufactures spec. After this the cylinder head is re-installed with a new head gasket and new head bolts.
Once they are re-installed a new timing belt kit with tensioners (if the engine is chain driven then the chain(s) are checked and new tensioners are fitted if needed) and water pump if it goes through the timing belt during the procedure the engine is re-timed so once it starts it does not bend/hit a valve. The engine is then re-installed into the vehicle and once everything is re-attached new fluids are topped up and the car STARTS!! This type of job usually takes longer to do, but this is all dependent on how busy we and the machine shop are, this job can either be done at the customers house or the vehicle can be taken to another location.
If the customer wants a new engine fitting, they source their own engine and once we get the new engine we replace the timing belt with tensioners and water pump if it goes through the timing, after which the old fluids out of the engine are drained and replaced alongside with a new oil filter. Once that has been done the old engine is taken out of the vehicle and parts which can be transferred and/or are in a better condition they are place onto the new engine. This job is more dependent on fast a replacement engine can be sourced.
